I started lifting weights at 36—not because I loved it, but because I’d spent a year telling my patients they should. I knew I had to practise what I preached. I didn’t start with heavy lifting. I started with resistance bands and a wobble board.
Now, at 39, I know I’m in perimenopause. I understand that bone strength can drop by up to 25% during this time. That’s part of my why. But what keeps me going isn’t just health data.
It’s how I feel. Stronger. More present. More me.
I can run beside my daughter, do cartwheels with her, and race her through obstacle courses. I feel capable in everyday life and that feels better than any number on a scale or barbell.
The gym has become my play space, my reset button, my community. A place where I’m not a doctor, not a mum - just someone who shows up, moves her body, and feels alive.
Bring on the school mums’ race. I’ll be there, grinning.
Be strong, stay strong, get stronger, kia kaha
